Capulong says award brings attention to social justice

Toronto personal injury lawyer Maria Capulong says receiving the Ontario Trial Lawyers’ Association 2011 Outstanding Young Lawyer Award brings “awareness and attention to areas where social justice and the legal profession can intersect.”
Called to the bar in 2007, Capulong has a passion for social justice – and it shows both in and out of the courtroom.
Capulong, an associate with Carranza LLP says live-in caregivers and other temporary foreign workers are similar to injured clients in that both groups are “vulnerable members of our community who are subject to what can be seen as an inoperable system.
“I’m just really thankful, and quite frankly humbled by the award,” says Capulong. “I hope it inspires other lawyers to ensure that we continue to fearlessly champion through the pursuit of the highest standards of advocating the cause of those who have suffered injury or injustice.”
Capulong’s background is in psychology, a tenacity honed by years of running her own firm, and experience on her feet before the court as a former provincial prosecutor.
She says she pursued a career in law in order to fill a need after noticing that the Philippine community lacked legal representation, and continues to dedicate a portion of her practice to issues that disproportionately affect that community, including migrant worker law
